Are athletes responsible enough to make their own injury decisions

This topic comes on the heels of James Reimer getting his ‘bell rung’ the other night against the LA Kings. Reimer entered the game in a relief appearance for injured goalie Johnathan Bernier. He appeared to take a skate to the head in a collision with Kings player Jarret Stoll. On Saturday he had this to say in his response to a possible concussion situation:

Although Reimer knows his body well and how he’s feeling, he is fighting for playing time, and trying to gain back Carlyle’s trust. The NHL and individual club medical staff need to keep these decisions out of players hands for this exact type of situation.
